Henry J. Austin Health Center, Inc.***

H enry J. Austin Health Center (HJA) has served as the major non-hospital based comprehensive primary care provider for the Greater Trenton area for over 30 years. HJA began as an operation of the City of Trenton in 1969 and, in 1986, was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. Located within walking distance of State Capital Buildings and the Delaware River in central New Jersey, HJA's comprehensive primary medical and dental services are accessible to the city's 85,407 residents.

Trenton's residents are of widely diverse cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds and are geographically divided along those same lines. The trend has been for younger residents to move to the suburbs for better opportunities and to escape crime, drugs and other social problems, leaving behind an older and poorer population.

Utilizing the Life Cycle concept, HJA's services include obstetrics and gynecology; pediatrics; family practice medicine (including adolescent health care); internal and adult medicine; HIV counseling/testing/treatment; mental health; social services; pharmacy; podiatry, phlebotomy and other ancillary services. HJA is especially known for its outstanding dental services.

HJA is a participating provider in six managed health care and dental care programs and provides services to over 12,000 patients annually, generating more than 46,000 patient visits. Henry J. Austin Health Center, Inc. operates three facilities. Its main site at 321 N. Warren Street, with two satellite locations -- Ewing Health Center (primary site for the HealthCare for the Homeless (HCH) population) and Chambers Manor Family Pratice, located directly across the street from Trenton's only high school. All sites are located in the 4th and 12th Congressional Districts of New Jersey. High-risk pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), hypertension and diabetes mellitus are among the most common diagnoses of HJA patients. HJA serves as the major HIV Counseling and Testing Center in the City of Trenton. Another major service provided by the Center relates to comprehensive obstetrics and gynecological services. With highly trained Obstetricians/Gynecologists and Certified Nurse Midwives, comprehensive perinatal care and women's health services are provided. Deliveries take place at Capital Health System at Mercer. HJA is a certified HealthStart provider.

Austin has forged many collaborations and partnerships in the city of Trenton to improve health care access, which include: Children's Futures — a city-wide, $20 million, RWJ funded project to improve birth outcomes, strengthen effective parenting, improve quality in child care, and help children develop early literacy and Asthma Collaborative — a comprehensive and coordinated asthma management/treatment program for children 0-18 years of age residing in Trenton.

Significant proposed projects include expansion of after hours care, a new 10,000 square foot replacement site for the Healthcare for the Homeless Program, development of a hospital affiliation/collaboration and formation of an integrated continuum of care, and expansion of specialty care services.
