Eric B. Chandler Health Center
T
he Eric B. Chandler Health Center, operated by the UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and the Eric B. Chandler Community Board, is a comprehensive, family oriented community health center, dedicated to the provision of high quality ambulatory care to the low income and medically indigent residents of the Greater New Brunswick community. The center which opened in October 1987, in an effort to address the needs of this underserved population, was dedicated to the memory of Eric B. Chandler, Ed.D., an active and respected community leader for many years, who was recognized for his work in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and on the Board of Directors of the Urban League of Greater New Brunswick.
The primary care services provided include: family medicine; internal medicine; HIV counseling, testing and treatment; pediatrics including EPSDT and well-child care; obstetrics and gynecology, including family planning; dentistry including preventive, restoration and curative, and podiatry. Other services include social services, community outreach, laboratory, nutrition, and health education.
The services of the center are provided on an appointment basis and without regard for ability to pay. All types of insurance are accepted including Medicaid, Medicare and various types of city welfare. There is a sliding fee scale, updated annually, based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines, adjusted to the patient's ability to pay. There is an on-call rotation of physicians available to take calls 24 hours a day.
