Newark Community Health Centers, Inc.

T he city of Newark is a diverse community with a unique culture and special needs. Newark Community Health Centers, (NCHC) strives to recognize Newark's individual demands and takes pride in its commitment to meeting these needs. Although NCHC's central focus is on the delivery of primary care, certain sections of the city's population require specialized attention. Consequently, there is an emphasis on the delivery of specialized primary care. NCHC targets the many special populations that comprise Newark.

Newark has one of the highest incidences of low birth weight in the state of New Jersey, accompanied by one of the lowest incidence of prenatal care. NCHC reacted to these statistics by opening a center dedicated to obstetrical and gynecological care. This site offers obstetrics, gynecology, family planning, and midwifery services.

NCHC has responded similarly to the AIDS crisis. Newark has one of the highest incidences of AIDS in New Jersey. Reacting to this, NCHC has moved to the forefront in the field of AIDS diagnosis and treatment. NCHC was selected to receive one of the three national demonstration grants which are jointly funded by U.S. Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control. In addition, NCHC has also received funding from the State of New Jersey for HIV testing, counseling, and treatment. Goals within these two programs are two-fold: first, trying to keep HIV positive patients as healthy as possible for as long as possible through a host of counseling services, and, second, trying to persuade those patients who test positive to bring in their partners for testing, to help track the spread of the disease.

The youth and adolescents of the city also have special needs and attention. The high incidence of pregnancy and drug abuse, coupled with few positive social outlets for teenagers in Newark, has prompted NCHC to open a center for adolescents where teens can receive complete medical care and counseling.

When Newark acts, Newark Community Health Centers react, growing with the community, and tailoring its services to the populations it serves.
