Celebrating Women's Health in New Jersey

2017 Mad Hatter Luncheon Honoring Women’s Health

The New Jersey Primary Care Association successfully hosted its Thirteenth Annual National Women's Health Week Luncheon at Mercer Oaks Country Club in Princeton Junction, New Jersey on Friday, May 19, 2017.

This year’s theme was Mad Hatter from the story of Alice in Wonderland. Over 80 attendees from across the state, joined us down the rabbit hole, wearing their maddest hats to celebrate women’s health. Attendees included health center CEOs and staff, NJ Department of Health, American Cancer Society, health insurance representatives along with many other stakeholders.

The Mad Hatter Luncheon featured presentations from leading women’s health experts, Helen Dao of Dao Management Consulting Services, Ernestine Shepherd, Guinness Book of World Records oldest female body builder, and breast cancer warrior, Lisa Petrillo. All three women shared their personal and professional experiences on their journey to living a healthier life. Topics such as nutrition, general physical health, the importance of exercise, mental health, gynecological health, breast and colorectal cancer were all discussed at the luncheon. The panel of speakers achieved the goal of leaving the audience empowered to make their health a top priority!

Meet the speakers:

Ernestine Shepherd, at age 80, is a fitness guru in her own right. Her mantra for the past 20 years has been "Determined, Dedicated, Disciplined - To be fit for life."  She believes that it is never too late to become physically fit. In March of 2010, on stage in Rome, Italy, she was formally given the title of World's Oldest Performing Female BodyBuilder (by Guinness World Records). At the age of 56, she began working out at Coppin State College with her sister. The story goes that she and her sister were displeased with how they looked in swim suits and decided to do something about it. They began to train vigorously but unfortunately, her sister succumbed to a brain aneurysm. However, Ernestine Shepherd decided to work even harder and vowed to carry on in her sister’s memory.

Helen Dao is the President and CEO of Dao Management Consulting Services, Inc.  Helen has worked with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for over 17 years with an expertise in clinical Quality Improvement and Program Compliance Assessments. Helen has presented to the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ), National Association of Public Health Policy, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the National Epilepsy Foundation America. She has a Master's degree in Health Care  Administration from New Jersey City University.

Lisa Petrillo is breast cancer warrior and a single mom from NJ with 2 children. Lisa was avid in Mixed Martial Arts, training hard religiously at least 5 days a week. She had been a vegetarian since the age of 16 and tried to eat organic whenever she could. Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 weeks before her 41st birthday. The cancer was discovered on a screening mammogram that she had delayed due to family obligations. Lisa is the definition of a true fighter. Not only did she battle breast cancer, but she has hopes of returning to her Mixed Martial Arts training. Her story left the room in tears and the audience feeling inspired.

Thank you for an amazing 2017 Women’s Health Week Luncheon! National Women’s Health Week may be over, but it’s never too late to say yes to a healthier you. Why? Because healthy looks good on you!
